Phoenix was one of only three teams to beat San Miguel in the Philippine Cup earlier this season and the only team the Beermen have failed to vanquish so far.
After Friday night’s drubbing, the reigning three-time All-Filipino champs finally got their win back.
San Miguel rolled to another strong showing in the 2017 PBA Commissioner’s Cup, dominating the Fuel Masters, 110-88, at the MOA Arena.
It was the Beermen’s second win in as many games to finally get a nice start in the mid-season conference, their “Kryptonite” tournament so to speak over the last few years.
“So far, we are happy with the results. Despite na sluggish start namin, nakaka-recover kami,” head coach Leo Austria said.
After a close first quarter, the Beermen turned the heat up and unloaded a 15-0 run in the second quarter to break the game open.
San Miguel’s onslaught continued well into the second half as the Beermen led by as much as 25 points, 96-71.
June Mar Fajardo led San Miguel with 22 points, 14 in the third period, and eight rebounds. Import Charles Rhodes had another double-double with 19 points and 10 boards.
The usual suspects Marcio Lassiter (15 points), Alex Cabagnot (14 points), Chris Ross (11 points), and Arwind Santos (11 points) likewise finished in double figures.
Phoenix, which dropped to 2-3, got 21 points and 16 rebounds from Jameel McKay.
