MANILA, Philippines – It was business as usual for the San Miguel Beermen during the Holy Week, and their hard work paid off with a 103-97 victory over the Star Hotshots on Easter Sunday that hiked their record to 3-0 in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
Import Charles Rhodes had his best performance so far with 29 points and 10 boards, while four San Miguel locals also scored in double-digits, as the Beermen led by as much as 19 points before fending off a late Star rally for the win.
Coach Leo Austria revealed after the game that he gave the Beermen the day off on Good Friday, but was confident that his players would still know what to do come game time. He also said that some San Miguel players opted to go to the gym and work out during the Holy Week.
“We never really had a break,” said Chris Ross, who had 19 points including the lay-up that sealed the deal with under 20 seconds left. “The whole week, we only had Good Friday off.”
“We really prepared hard for this game, because Star is a contender,” he stressed. “So we sacrificed our Holy Week break to get better and prepare for Star.”
“It was all business this week.”
