San Miguel point guard Chris Ross was named the Finals MVP of the SMART BRO PBA Philippine Cup Finals after helping lead his team to the title in Game 7 but he believes that the award should be an honor shared with the rest of his team.
The Beermen, thanks in part to Ross, made history by becoming the first PBA team to come back to win a best-of-seven series after losing the first three games.
“I can’t really take this trophy by myself. When we were down 0-3 in Game 4, Gabby (Espinas) had an All-Star performance. Marcio (Lassiter) had an All-Star performance. Alex (Cabagnot) had a big shot in overtime. June Mar (Fajardo) came back playing 60% on his knee. We’re all MVPs. To me, we’re all MVPs,” Ross said after being handed the award.
“I can’t just take this award by myself. It’s a team thing, we’re all MVPs.”
The contributions of Ross, though, could not be discounted, especially in Game 7. He scored 21 points in the series-clincher, sharing game-high honors with Fajardo. Despite not being known for his shooting, he also connected on four three-pointers to help his team capture the 22nd title in franchise history.
He finished with averages of 8.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, four assists, 1.7 steals in the finals.
